Red Tag Glossary: Every Term on Your Tag, Explained

This glossary explains every term commonly found on an Ontario gas appliance red tag or inspection report, including tag classifications, regulatory bodies, appliance and combustion terms, venting components, gas piping parts, and testing procedures. Use it alongside your technician's written report to understand exactly what was found and what needs to happen before service is restored.

Tag and regulatory terms

These terms identify who has authority over a red tag and what kind of tag you're looking at. They come from Ontario's gas safety framework, not from any individual contractor.

Type A tag
The most serious classification, issued when an immediate hazard requires the gas supply to be shut off on the spot. A Type A tag means the technician disconnects or locks the gas meter or appliance valve immediately, and it cannot be restored without a re-inspection.
Type B tag
A less urgent classification for a condition that is unsafe but does not require immediate shutoff. A Type B tag allows continued use of the appliance for a limited period while the homeowner arranges a correction, after which it must be reinspected.
TSSA
The Technical Standards and Safety Authority, the Ontario regulator that oversees gas technician licensing and appliance safety enforcement. TSSA sets the rules gas technicians in Ontario must follow, though individual technicians and companies like ThermalOps are not affiliated with or endorsed by TSSA — TSSA is the regulator, not a service provider.
CSA B149.1
The Natural Gas and Propane Installation Code, the primary national standard for gas piping, venting, and appliance installation in Canada. Almost every red tag references a specific clause of CSA B149.1 as the basis for the finding.
CSA B149.2
The Propane Storage and Handling Code, covering propane tank placement, storage, and handling separately from the installation code. This standard applies specifically to homes and businesses using propane rather than natural gas.
Ontario Regulation 212/01
The provincial regulation under the Technical Standards and Safety Act that governs gas-fired appliances and gives TSSA its enforcement authority. It sets out licensing requirements for gas technicians and the legal basis for red-tagging unsafe appliances.
G1/G2/G3 gas technician
Licensing classes for gas technicians in Ontario, with G1 being the highest level of certification. A G1-certified technician can work on any gas appliance and system covered by the code, including complex commercial installations, while G2 is limited to most residential and small commercial work.
Enbridge Gas
The natural gas utility that supplies and meters gas service to most homes in the Greater Toronto Area and much of Ontario. Enbridge Gas can independently lock a meter for non-payment or safety concerns, separate from a technician's red tag; ThermalOps is an independent contractor and is not affiliated with or endorsed by Enbridge Gas.
Meter lock
A physical lock placed on the gas meter that stops gas flow to the entire property. A meter lock can be applied by the utility or, in urgent safety cases, requested by a technician, and it affects every gas appliance in the home, not just the one that failed inspection.
Return to service
The point at which a red tag is cleared and gas flow to the appliance or property is restored. Only a certified gas technician can authorize return to service, typically after re-testing confirms the original hazard has been corrected.

Appliance and combustion terms

These terms describe the appliance itself and how safely it's burning gas — the core of what a combustion safety inspection is checking.

Heat exchanger
The sealed metal component inside a furnace or boiler that transfers heat from burning gas to the air or water circulating through the house. A cracked heat exchanger lets combustion gas mix with heated air and is not field-repairable under CSA B149.1.
Combustion analysis
A test using an electronic analyzer to measure flue gas composition, including carbon monoxide, oxygen, and efficiency. It's the primary tool technicians use to confirm safe and complete combustion, and abnormal readings often trigger further inspection for cracks or venting problems.
CO (carbon monoxide)
A colourless, odourless gas produced by incomplete combustion that is dangerous even at low concentrations. Elevated CO in flue gas, ambient air, or supply air is one of the most common reasons an appliance is red-tagged.
ppm air free
Parts per million, corrected to remove the effect of excess combustion air, used to standardize CO readings across appliances. Readings are converted to this figure so a technician can compare a result against code thresholds regardless of how much excess air a particular burner uses.
Category I-IV appliances
A classification system describing an appliance's vent pressure (positive or negative) and whether its flue gas condenses. Category I appliances use natural draft with non-condensing flue gas, while Category IV appliances are forced-draft and condensing; the category determines what venting material and configuration is legally required.
Condensing furnace
A high-efficiency furnace (typically 90%+ AFUE) that extracts enough heat from flue gas that water vapour condenses out of it. These furnaces vent through PVC pipe rather than metal because the condensate is mildly acidic, and they produce a condensate drain line that must be maintained.
Orphaned water heater
A water heater left venting alone into a chimney after a furnace it used to share the chimney with is upgraded to sealed PVC venting. The chimney is now oversized for the water heater's smaller flue gas volume, which often causes it to cool and stop drafting properly, leading to spillage.
Draft hood
The open component at the top of a naturally vented appliance that allows dilution air to mix with flue gas before it enters the vent. Draft is checked at the draft hood using a mirror, smoke pencil, or manometer during a spillage test.
Induced draft
A venting design where a small fan pulls flue gas out of the appliance and up the vent rather than relying purely on natural buoyancy. Induced draft furnaces are more tolerant of longer vent runs and slight depressurization than fully natural-draft appliances.
Pilot
A small, continuously or intermittently burning flame used to ignite the main burner. Older appliances use a standing pilot that burns continuously, while newer ones use intermittent or hot-surface ignition instead.
Thermocouple
A safety device that senses pilot flame heat and keeps the gas valve open only while the pilot is lit. If the pilot goes out, the thermocouple cools and shuts the main gas valve within seconds, preventing unburned gas from accumulating.
Thermopile
A larger version of a thermocouple that generates enough electrical current to power the gas valve and sometimes a wall thermostat, without external electricity. Thermopiles are common on appliances designed to work during a power outage, such as some gas fireplaces and water heaters.

Venting terms

Venting terms describe how combustion by-products leave the house, which is where spillage and backdrafting problems originate.

Spillage
Combustion gas escaping into the room instead of venting outside, usually at the draft hood or a loose connector. Spillage is tested for directly with a smoke pencil or mirror and is one of the most common causes of a fixable red tag.
Worst-case depressurization
A test that checks whether an appliance still vents properly with exhaust fans, the dryer, and range hood all running and interior doors closed. It simulates the most negative air pressure a home can realistically reach, since a single at-rest reading can miss spillage that only happens under those conditions.
Draft
The natural or induced movement of air and combustion gas up through a vent or chimney and out of the building. Draft depends on flue gas temperature, vent height, and outdoor conditions, which is why draft can fail on cold, windy, or humid days even when it passed before.
Backdrafting
Combustion gas being pulled back down a chimney or vent into the house instead of exiting outdoors. It's often caused by depressurization from exhaust fans or a chimney that's too cold to establish upward flow.
Flue
The passage, pipe, or chimney that carries combustion gas from an appliance to the outdoors. The term is used generally for both metal vent pipe and masonry chimneys.
Vent connector
The section of pipe connecting an appliance's flue outlet to the main vent or chimney. Corroded, disconnected, or improperly sloped vent connectors are a common, low-cost cause of spillage red tags.
B-vent
A double-wall metal vent pipe used for natural-draft, non-condensing gas appliances. B-vent relies on the appliance's own draft and correct sizing; it cannot be used with condensing furnaces, which require PVC.
Chimney liner
A sleeve, typically stainless steel, installed inside a masonry chimney to properly size and seal the flue passage for a specific appliance. Relining is a common fix for an orphaned water heater whose masonry chimney has become oversized; this masonry and liner work is coordinated through vetted partner contractors.

Gas piping terms

These terms cover the piping and safety components between the meter and the appliance itself.

Manual shut-off valve
A valve installed near an appliance that allows gas flow to be stopped by hand without affecting the rest of the system. CSA B149.1 requires an accessible shut-off valve for every gas appliance, and a missing or inaccessible one is a common finding on inspection reports.
Drip leg
A short vertical pipe section installed below the gas connection to an appliance to catch debris or condensate before it reaches the burner. Also called a sediment trap; a missing drip leg is a frequent minor code deficiency noted during inspections.
Sediment trap
Another name for a drip leg, referring to its function of trapping scale, rust, or moisture out of the gas line before the appliance. It's required on most appliance connections under CSA B149.1 and is inexpensive to add if missing.
Flexible connector
A short, flexible metal gas line used to connect a movable appliance, such as a range or dryer, to the rigid gas piping. Flexible connectors have a maximum allowable length and must be rated for the appliance; damaged or improperly routed connectors are a common finding.
Manifold pressure
The gas pressure measured at the appliance's internal manifold, just before the burner orifices. It must fall within the range specified on the appliance's data plate; incorrect manifold pressure affects combustion quality and can cause CO production.
Input rating (BTU/h)
The rate at which an appliance consumes gas energy, expressed in British thermal units per hour. It's printed on the data plate and used to size gas piping, venting, and combustion air openings correctly.

Testing and documentation terms

These terms relate to how a technician documents an appliance's condition and installation requirements.

Leak test
A test performed with an electronic detector or approved solution to check gas piping and connections for leaks. Leak tests are performed after any work on gas piping and periodically as part of routine safety inspections.
Pressure test
A test that pressurizes a gas piping system with air or inert gas and monitors for pressure drop over time to confirm there are no leaks. It's typically required after new gas piping is installed and before it's put into service.
Data plate
The manufacturer's metal or adhesive label on an appliance listing its model, serial number, input rating, manifold pressure, and clearance requirements. A technician references the data plate to confirm the appliance is operating within its designed specifications.
Clearance to combustibles
The minimum required distance between a gas appliance or its vent and any combustible material, such as wood framing. Clearances are set by the manufacturer's data plate and CSA B149.1, and inadequate clearance is a common installation deficiency found during inspection.
Combustion air
The air supply required for an appliance to burn gas completely and safely. CSA B149.1 sets minimum combustion air openings or duct sizes based on the appliance's input rating and the room's volume; insufficient combustion air is a common cause of spillage.
Make-up air
Outdoor air brought into a house to replace air removed by exhaust fans, range hoods, or dryers. In tightly sealed homes, insufficient make-up air can depressurize the house enough to cause backdrafting in naturally vented appliances.
Appliance shut-off
The act of closing an appliance's dedicated gas valve, stopping gas flow to that appliance specifically without affecting the rest of the home. This is distinct from a meter lock, which cuts gas to the entire property; a red tag on one appliance usually results in an appliance shut-off rather than a full meter lock.

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between a Type A and Type B red tag?

A Type A tag means an immediate hazard exists and gas is shut off on the spot, while a Type B tag flags an unsafe condition that can wait a limited time for correction without shutting off gas immediately. Both require a certified technician to clear them once fixed.

What does CSA B149.1 actually cover?

CSA B149.1 is the national installation code for natural gas and propane appliances and piping in Canada, covering everything from pipe sizing to venting to clearances. Nearly every red tag citation traces back to a specific clause in this code.

Who can legally clear a red tag in Ontario?

What's the difference between a meter lock and an appliance shut-off?
